A friend who lived through the Great Depression once told me that for her, it wasn't a bad time at all.
She said they grew their own foods, so they had plenty to eat. People moved into their home to share the space and help with the responsibilities so more got accomplished that needed to be done. They worked together in ways they had not in the past. They canned food and they found ways to get through the time by pulling together.
Her words stuck with me over the years and now that I'm at an age where I have more simplicity in my life I wanted to find a way to learn things I never knew. I have an interest in Organic gardening and found three places where I could actually learn and put what I am learning into place here n the Asheville area. Jim Daubert in Fairview is guiding me through a lot of the process, teaching me about soil mixture, raising seedlings and planting. He had more food last summer than he could use and donated it to the Manna Food Bank. Hopefully this summer we will be making sauces and condiments from the excess and learning new recipes. This is his passion. I'm hoping to network with others who would like to learn more about growing their own foods in a sustainable way.
Another friend is part of a community garden in North Asheville and I'm trying to help her with planting and add more plants as the summer progresses. I am finding it more like a type meditation rather than the hard work I imagined. Maybe because we are getting help with the heavy labor of getting the soil ready. So far it has been more fun than I had imagined and I'm looking forward to learning more. Anyone interested in learning with us....I'd like to welcome.
