Creating a World That Works for All: One Community at a Time

Saturnday, January 31

If life is a highway, then I'm increasingly desirous of being in the slow lane. I long to spend my days listening to the wind in the trees; smelling the changes of the seasons; tasting the flavours of the fruits of the earth; seeing the vibrant spectrum of the colors we are awash in; touching the luxuriant textures of the earth and feeling the Love that keeps the whole thing going. I have been following the communities movement with varying degrees of participation for some 30 years. I have learned a lot both as an observer and through direct experience. The more I experience on this road to community sustainability, the more I 'know', the more I find out how little I know. I have found most helpful to be in a space of having a 'beginners mind', always receptive to the nuance presented by others sharing their experiences. Probably of most value on this journey has been the realization that to be truely sustainable, an individual and community process of sharing openly and equitably is paramount to making lasting RELATIONSHIPS. In my experience, so often conversations of sustainability go straight to the technologies of sustaining our physical infrastructures(solar power, organic gardening, etc). While this conversation is important, I have found that it is NOT the deciding factor of true 'sustainability.' All the 'sustainable' technology in the world cannot sustain us if we don't have a process for sustaining our relationships. I'm ready to throw myself into the process of the sustainable dialogue and conversations that build relationships in the context of community. That's all for now.

I feel the swelling of springs effervescence in me. Like a seed in the ground, waiting in the dark, I expand in anticipation of the rising tide of springs returning sunshine. As this waxing season calls me from hibernation,
I gently take care to do those things that need doing inside so I may be ready to send my shoots up into the light of the warming days. In the following days and weeks, these shoots will start showing up in the fertile soil of community.

Of most prominence will be the Statement of Purpose and the Statement of Mission for Sunny Hollow Gardens, LLC.
In tandem will be the Sunny Hollow Gardens Newsletter. In a sense, this has aleady broken through the ground with the midwinter beginning of this blog.

I am grateful for the challenges expressing themselves in the form of the electronic media(internet). This literal and fugurative 'brainchild' is here to teach me the fickle subtlties of expansion into new dimensions for communicating widely. What a miracle this is to be able to communicate this way. I'm learning to ride this electronic wave as a beginning surfer.

For now, my internet time, at the library, is soon to expire. So now, I go back to the warm cocoon on these cold, February days to go 'inside', and finish the business of dormancy. Aloha, Steve

Steve,

Couldn't agree more. In the Sustainable Collaboration workshop last week, we were talking about that very thing. If we call the traditional conversations the horizontal component of community, then I would call relationship and presence the vertical aspect of Community. Its the vertical I think that will give all this meat. Really enjoyed meeting you at the ACN gathering last weekend and looking forward to further collaborations.. K
