Paul Hawken's unforgettable Commencement address to University of Portland class of 2009

Healing or Stealing? - “You are brilliant, and the earth is hiring…” by Paul Hawken

When I was invited to give this speech, I was asked if I could give a simple short talk that was “direct, naked, taut, honest, passionate, lean, shivering, startling, and graceful.” Boy, no pressure there.

But let’s begin with the startling part. Hey, Class of 2009: you are going to have to figure out what it means to be a human being on earth at a time when every living system is declining, and the rate of de… Continue

Kerry,

It was very good to meet you at your first public speaking event. I look forward to the next world cafe event March 8. Even though I missed the last one, I'm comming up to speed for the next one quickly through access to this wonderful website. Many thanks for getting this thing going. I agree that it is important to 'feed the field' and I get a sense that I'm not alone in this view.
In the following month leading up to the next world cafe, I expect to do just that. Now that I've finally got a 'blog' going in the context of the community of this website, I'll be feeding the field as much as I can. Steve

You're amazing! Our meeting went well yesterday - I'm sure Maureen must have filled you in about it and the 3 new questions we came up with for the next invite/topic for the next event. I look forward to it - and to hearing more about how this is spreading! Blessings, Gayatri

This discussion is leading to a creative space I have been craving for a long time. While housing for elders has been a passion for a long time, the import to me is a return to the tradition of elders occupying a special role as sages and wisdom-sharers, nurturers for the young, and reminders of who we are a community, which will enrich the experience for all.
