Event Description

Come out and play...at Hickory Nut Forest Eco-Community in beautiful Hickory Nut Gorge, 25 minutes east of Asheville.

Join our resident environmental educator on a family-friendly hike along Hickory Nut Creek into the Little Bearwallow
Mountain Preserve area. Identify native WNC trees, wildflowers and edible plants along the way.

Hickory Nut Forest is a unique conservation community located on Hwy 74-A in the village of Gerton . The development is the collaborative effort of John Myers and Jane Lawson, along with family and friends, who have protected a total of 270 acres of land adjacent to the 600 acre Florence Nature preserve.

Hickory Nut Forest consists of homesites on mature hardwood forest, with green-built covenants in place to create a thoughtfully-planned and energy-efficient neighborhood. The family-friendly community includes options for a variety of residential needs, such as smaller homes, shared lots, co-housing, and long-term leases on rustic cabins and treehouses.

John and Jane see themselves as stewards of this beautiful land and want it to be enjoyed by the wider community. Current activities include cultivation of the Honey Bear Orchard, the addition of an organic farm & vineyard, and restoration of the historic gristmill site as the Laughing Waters retreat, community center and event space. Monthly events, potluck bonfires and outings with local groups are a growing part of community life at Hickory Nut Forest.

An avid rock climber, John worked for 20 years as an advocate with land trusts, helping to protect over 20,000 acres of land for parks and trails.

While this development sounds like a dream come true, much like is envisioned for Highland Lake, it's not something I can afford...and in these tough times, I'm not alone. I'm looking for affordable housing and community, a combination I'm not yet seeing in our area.
