SUMMARY:ACN Monthly Meeting/Potluck, Nov 8: The Green Imperative
DESCRIPTION:The Green Imperative: Green in Asheville? A Community Ques
tion\n\nWith peak oil and global warming nipping at our heels, newly b
uilt green communities are springing up all over Asheville while Ameri
corps is frantically training a volunteer workforce to begin weatheriz
ing older homes. The trend to go green is obvious, and imperative.\n\n
Do you really want to build a home that isn't green right now?\n\nFrom
Jillian Wolf, ACN member and seeker of community: “In my own explor
ations of building community, one aspect I often consider is the build
ings themselves. My sense is that the greener the better. So what's ou
t there? What are my options in Asheville? Is going green ever going t
o be an affordable alternative? These are some of the questions I hope
to answer for myself while sharing the dialogue with other members of
ACN.”\n\nJoin us for the first in a series of explorations on green
building options. Clarke Snell will present a building concept,\nThe
Nauhaus: A High Performance, Natural Building System.\n\nThe Nauhaus (
pronounced “now house”) is a building system born from one simple
thought: What would happen if we considered our present climate change
crisis as an opportunity to make life better? Our answer has been to
develop a \"whole systems\" building design approach that combines the
best of cutting edge modern building science with the advantages of t
raditional building materials and techniques. Clarke will outline this
approach and cover some of the basic concepts that make up the core o
 f “green building” along the way.\n\nQuestions welcome!\n\nSpeaker
bio:\nClarke Snell is the executive director of The Nauhaus Institute
(NHI), an organization working toward the creation of a carbon neutra
l built environment. NHI’s focus is to combine high performance buil
ding science with low embodied energy (sometimes called “natural”)
building materials, techniques, and strategies. NHI is currently buil
ding one of the first houses in the US insulated with hempcrete and pe
rhaps the first hempcrete residence attempting to achieve Passive Hous
e certification in the world. Clarke is the author of two books on alt
ernatives to conventional construction, “The Good House Book” and
“Building Green: A Complete How-to Guide to Alternative Building Met
 hods”.\n\n4pm - Presentation / 5:30 pm - Potluck\n3:15 pm - Newcomer
s are invited to a short introduction on\nIntentional Communities and
 ACN (Asheville Communities Network).\n\n$5 suggested donation\n\nFor m
